Medical repatriation from China cost: major components

Start with the overseas destination

Clarify whether the patient is returning to a home, hospital or rehabilitation facility and which country will receive them. A passport country may differ from residence or the agreed care destination. The China hospital decides release and current support; the overseas receiver separately decides acceptance. These answers determine whether an accompanied commercial flight, airline stretcher or dedicated aircraft is even a sensible proposal. Do not compare prices for modes the responsible clinician or operator has not assessed.

Price both sides of departure

A complete proposal should identify the China hospital-to-airport vehicle, terminal assistance, flight and escort or flight medical team, overseas airport-to-destination vehicle and final handover. Include staff positioning and return travel where applicable. A low China-side ground quote can be useful, but it should not be labelled total repatriation cost. Ask whether medicine, oxygen, mobility equipment, companions and substantial baggage fit the quoted scope. The provider must state exclusions and the actual operator for each leg once known.

Treat payment and change separately

An overseas insurer, employer, assistance desk or family may pay different portions. A hospital guarantee in China may not cover a road vehicle or foreign receiving care. Request written approval per component and a named change approver. Discharge moving by a day can change airline documents, escort duty and overseas receiving time. Do not simply shift the China pickup while leaving the rest unchanged. Compare total proposals using the same destination and patient support, then obtain renewed acceptance for affected operators after a change.

Outbound dependencies

For departure from China, the sending hospital’s release, China road leg, carrier or aircraft arrangement, overseas pickup and receiving facility each belong in the estimate. The overseas end may be procured by another assistance desk; say clearly whether its price is included. Compare exchange rates and currencies only as stated by the actual suppliers, without promising a fixed converted amount. If the foreign receiving facility has not accepted, an outbound flight quote is conditional. Ask who funds a cancelled road team if discharge is delayed.
