UK waiting list and a China specialist visit: what to check before booking
An overseas appointment may shorten one wait but creates decisions about clinical suitability, records, payments and the handoff to a UK clinician.

Clarify the missing decision
A long wait for imaging, an outpatient review and an elective procedure are three different problems. Ask the current clinician what information is needed next and whether travel during the wait is medically suitable; do not equate an earlier booking with better treatment.
Define what the China provider will do
Confirm whether a named department is reviewing the case, what records it needs, whether the visit is an examination or consultation and when an appointment could be confirmed. A city or hospital guide alone does not confer specialist availability.
Plan usable records for returning home
Ask what original results, imaging files and discharge or consultation notes can be provided, in what language and by whom. Agree with the UK follow-up team how they want to receive them; a translation does not automatically integrate into an NHS pathway.
Include the China-side journey
If an accompanying relative needs language help, if the patient cannot use ordinary transport, or if the appointment follows arrival immediately, check the airport-to-hospital leg and meeting point before buying the flight. Fees and insurance arrangements should be addressed individually.

Questions before a booking
Can a China appointment replace a UK waiting-list slot?
Do not cancel an existing pathway solely because an overseas visit is being explored. Confirm its scope and the onward plan with the clinicians involved.
