Bringing prescription medication into China for a medical journey

Prepare the medication plan for the whole journey: entry, screening, flight, ground transfer and the receiving team. A prescription explains treatment; it does not settle every border or carriage question.

Discuss documents and coordination

Identify what is actually travelling

Start with the generic name, brand, all active ingredients, strength, formulation and total quantity. A photograph of the original label helps resolve differences between overseas brand names and Chinese terminology. Keep the prescription and a clinician-prepared explanation consistent with those details. If someone else will carry the medicine, identify that person and ask the relevant authorities about the arrangement; a patient’s own supply and a professional escort’s medical stock are not interchangeable descriptions.

Separate three decisions

China’s Drug Import Administration Measures, Article 39, places small personal medication quantities within personal-use and reasonable-quantity supervision by Customs. This is not a universal numerical allowance. Check controlled-drug classification separately. Airport security and dangerous-goods screening concern the physical item and its packing; the operating airline decides its carriage arrangements. A favourable answer from one organisation should be retained as evidence for that question, not presented as permission from all three.

Ask about the actual entry and connection

Provide the entry port, transit countries, whether baggage is reclaimed and whether the passenger will cross immigration during a connection. Do not describe a landside overnight stay as airside transit. Ask the relevant Customs channel which documents, restrictions and declaration procedure apply to the exact product. Under Customs Announcement 2025 No.43, items requiring written declaration follow the declaration/red-channel process. Declaration itself does not make a restricted item admissible. Keep the dated reply with the packing list.

Plan temperature, access and accessories

Ask the prescribing team or pharmacist for product-specific storage instructions and a plan for delays. Confirm the proposed cooling materials with the airline and security authority rather than assuming all cooling packs are equivalent. Emirates, for example, says personal medication cannot be refrigerated in its galley chillers. That carrier-specific statement is a reason to verify your own flight, not a rule for every airline. List needles, liquids and devices separately and make essential documentation accessible during inspection.

Keep continuity beyond the terminal

Before departure, agree who retains custody during escort-to-family or escort-to-local-team handover. Record the medicine inventory and the clinician’s instructions without asking a coordinator to change treatment. The receiving hospital must decide how it reviews outside medication; do not assume an overseas prescription guarantees local dispensing or that a hospital will administer a passenger’s supply. If replacement availability remains unknown, take that question back to the treating and receiving teams before travel.

Send a coordination brief, not an entire record

For an initial enquiry, send route and dates, medicine names and quantities, any controlled-status uncertainty, cooling or sharps needs, accompanying person and destination contact. State which replies you already hold and which decision is outstanding. ChinaMedTransfer can organise China-side document exchange, receiving liaison and ground handover planning. We do not issue import permission, replace Customs decisions or prescribe a substitute. Detailed clinical documents should follow only through the agreed authorised channel.

Initial enquiry

Send the unresolved coordination questions

Start with the itinerary, document purpose and unresolved items listed above, without attaching full clinical or financial records. Use an agreed authorised channel for later sensitive documents; an enquiry is not entry, admission or service confirmation.
