Equipment and flight decisions

Flying with CPAP to or from China: carry it or use it?

A CPAP packed for use at your destination and a CPAP needed during the flight create different requests. Establish which request you are making before relying on a general baggage answer.

Discuss the device and itinerary

Start with the journey, not the diagnosis

Write down whether use is planned while sleeping onboard, during an overnight connection, or only after arrival. Include every operating airline, not just the brand that sold the ticket. If a device is being carried unused, ask about packing, battery removal and cabin dimensions; permission to bring a bag does not resolve permission to run its contents. If use is necessary in flight, tell the carrier explicitly and ask which phases of flight are covered.

Two published examples, two checks

Cathay Pacific’s MEDA page exempts inflight CPAP use from medical clearance but still requires 48 hours’ advance notice. Singapore Airlines says a CPAP must fit under the seat ahead to be used; an oversized unit may be carried but not operated. These examples do not settle another carrier’s requirements or an additional medical condition. Follow the linked carrier guidance and obtain a response for the actual journey.

Prepare the machine as well as the paperwork

Send the manufacturer and exact model, a photograph of its label, dimensions in its travel configuration, and battery details. Identify humidifier, adapter and other accessories separately. Ask whether a prescription, physician statement or airline form is needed for your circumstances; do not replace a requested carrier form with a generic certificate. Airport screening remains a separate process, so keep the device identification and supporting documents accessible rather than inside inaccessible luggage.

Plan a usable night without assuming a socket

Work from battery runtime documented for the intended configuration, including accessories that draw power. A runtime quoted for a different setup is an unresolved question, not a reserve. Ask the operating carrier for its required duration and permitted spares, then consider connection and delay exposure. The aircraft-power guide explains why a seat outlet shown on a cabin map is not a sufficient fallback. Do not change prescribed treatment to fit a battery plan.

A second flight needs its own answer

For a connection, record use permission and packing instructions for each segment. If the second airline allows carriage only while the traveller needs inflight support, return the itinerary to the clinician and carrier for review. Likewise, a change of aircraft or seat can reopen a stowage question. Keep the current approval with the booking and ask which changes require resubmission instead of assuming the first answer transfers automatically.

Ask us to coordinate the China-side interface

For an enquiry, send dates, flight numbers and operating carriers, carry-only or inflight-use intent, model, battery labels, travel companion and onward destination. State whether support is needed in the terminal or ground vehicle. ChinaMedTransfer can scope that local interface and organise the information exchange; we do not determine fitness to fly or authorise cabin equipment. Necessary medical records can follow through an agreed authorised channel.

Initial enquiry

Send the unresolved coordination questions

Start with the itinerary and equipment details listed above, marking unconfirmed items. Exchange necessary medical documents through an agreed authorised channel; an enquiry is not carriage or service confirmation.
