In-flight oxygen and ground oxygen in China: avoiding a handover gap
Airline-approved equipment and road-vehicle oxygen are different arrangements; the transition needs a clinical plan.

Describe the requirement, not just the device
Ask the treating team whether oxygen is needed continuously, only in a specified situation, or merely available as a precaution. Record the clinician’s instructions and the personnel needed to supervise the transition. A statement such as “2 litres” without context does not define the complete transport plan.
Check the operating airline’s own rules
An airline may have specific requirements for portable oxygen concentrators, medical certificates, batteries and other equipment. The airline determines what can be used onboard. A road oxygen cylinder cannot simply be taken onto an aircraft because it was used in the ambulance.
Identify responsibility at the change of teams
Mark the last point of responsibility for the flight escort or airline and the first point where the ground clinical team can take over. If the patient cannot safely go without prescribed support through immigration or baggage, raise that dependency with the appropriate clinical and airport teams before departure.
Verify the road vehicle’s actual supply
Ask the ground provider what oxygen equipment is physically available, its delivery capacity, crew competence and the duration of the road journey. If it cannot meet the requested support, the clinical decision maker must review another plan.
Handover responsibility map
Operating airline approves permitted device and conditions.
Clinical teams define who supports the patient at the change of teams.
Ground provider confirms real supply, staffing and duration.
Questions before a booking
Does airline wheelchair assistance include oxygen on the road?
No. Airline mobility support and a clinically equipped road vehicle are separate scopes.
Can the family specify oxygen flow by email?
The family can relay a clinician’s instructions, but the responsible clinical team determines treatment needs and the provider confirms its ability.
